Urban convulsions

Victor Dragonetti

In 2013, a movement organized by high school students calls for free urban transport in São Paulo. These high school students block traffic in some streets of the megacity and organize sit-ins in front of Parliament. Then during an event, the group manages to mobilize 2,000 people. A second demonstration follows, then a third, until the police violently repress the movement. Indignation breaks out. This is the beginning of a series of events that will forever mark Brazil’s recent history. In fact, taken over by the right, diverted from its original purpose and spreading like wildfire, the movement will result in the dismissal of the President of the Republic, then the installation of a government of extreme right.

Victor Dragonetti photographed the urban chaos that dominated São Paulo those days. He was able to capture the scene from the inside, in all its violence and energy, its garish colors, with an aesthetic that is reminiscent of video games.
